The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is calling on hunters to participate in a vital annual program aimed at supporting those in need. With nearly 3 million New Yorkers bracing for reduced federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) support, the DEC and Feeding New York State collaborate to collect 50,000 to 70,000 pounds of venison each year from successful deer hunts.
To facilitate this, the DEC will cover processing fees for donated deer, ensuring the meat reaches food pantries and food banks statewide. However, due to limited funding, the program relies on additional monetary contributions from the public, emphasizing the critical need for community support during these challenging times. Those interested in learning more about the donation process are encouraged to visit the DEC’s website for additional guidelines and details.
