The New York Attorney General’s Office, led by Letitia James, announces that the fatal shooting of Akintunde Campbell by Rochester police is legally justified. This determination comes after an investigation revealed that the evidence supports the officer’s use of deadly force during an encounter on July 31, which began when police responded to reports of a man behaving suspiciously near parked cars.
Officers confronted Campbell, who exhibited signs of potential threat by trying to walk away despite a noticeable bulge in his sweatshirt. After failing to comply with commands to drop his weapon, he brandished a gun, prompting officers to fire. The complete body-worn camera footage from this incident is also available for review, ensuring transparency in the investigation.
