Hawaii DLE to Spend $500K on New Handguns Amid Safety Issues

The Hawaii Department of Law Enforcement (DLE) announces a $500,000 switch from the Sig Sauer P320 handgun, citing safety concerns and potential litigation stemming from multiple accidental discharges. After nearly a decade of use, the DLE has reported seven incidents of unintentional firings since 2020, including one mysterious case where a weapon discharged while holstered, leading to concerns over user safety and liability.

DLE Director Mike Lambert emphasizes that the transition to the Walther PDP Pro aims to reduce the risk of costly payouts from accidental shootings, which could reach seven or eight figures. With over 150 legal complaints against Sig Sauer and attorney Samuel Haaz highlighting a concerning lack of trigger safety in the P320, the department takes proactive measures to ensure the safety of both officers and the community. New handguns are expected to be distributed to deputies starting in December.
