A coalition of over sixty experts from various fields unveils a new action plan aimed at reducing gun violence in the U.S. The report, published in JAMA, highlights that more than 800,000 people have lost their lives to gun violence in the past 25 years, making the call for prevention strategies especially urgent. Co-author Dr. Joseph Sakran emphasizes the necessity of addressing underlying issues like poverty and trauma as means to effectively lower violence rates.
The proposed roadmap includes community-focused initiatives, such as the “Create Real Economic Destiny” program in Chicago, which has demonstrably lowered violent crime involvement by 73% among participants. The plan also advocates for legislative changes, noting that states with stricter gun laws typically experience fewer firearm-related deaths among children. In this critical moment, the authors assert that collective action is essential for making meaningful progress against the gun violence epidemic.
