Pregnant Women Face Increased Homicide Risk from Guns

A recent study highlights that pregnant women are 37% more likely to fall victim to firearm homicides compared to non-pregnant women of childbearing age, underscoring a disturbing trend where homicide becomes the leading cause of death for women during pregnancy. This analysis, published in JAMA Network Open, examined over 7,000 homicides from 2018 to 2021, revealing that more than two-thirds of pregnancy-associated homicides involved firearms.

Among the findings, researchers noted that each 1% increase in state firearm ownership correlates with a significant rise in homicide rates for pregnant women, emphasizing the critical role of gun availability in these tragedies. Advocates like Dr. Kelly Roskam call for robust policy changes, including safe storage laws and domestic violence firearm prohibitions, to help mitigate these risks. The study’s authors stress that addressing these systemic issues could lead to fewer deaths, particularly among young women during pregnancy, illustrating a pressing need for action.
