Stray Bullets Prompt Call for Public Shooting Range in Missouri

After stray bullets struck two homes in Bates County over the weekend, Sheriff Chad Anderson renewed his long-standing advocacy for a public shooting range. Investigators believe the incidents were unintentional, likely resulting from local hunters sighting their rifles ahead of the upcoming firearm deer season, which begins on November 15. The sheriff emphasizes the need for a dedicated facility to promote safe shooting practices in a community where approximately 90% of residents own firearms.

With no public range available within a reasonable distance—over 45 minutes away—Anderson warns that increasing residential development is making backyard shooting more hazardous. He has urged residents to contact county representatives to support the establishment of a range that would not only serve the public but also provide law enforcement a venue for firearms training. The sheriff underscores the responsibility of gun owners to practice safe handling and protect their neighbors from unintentional harm.
