In response to alarming gun violence incidents near Tates Creek schools, One Lexington has initiated a “safe passage” program designed to help students return home safely. Following recent shootings that left one person dead and another injured, the program will provide chaperoned walks for students until December 1, addressing the immediate safety concerns for around 1,000 children.
One Lexington is calling for 70 community volunteers to support the initiative, highlighting the importance of community engagement in combating rising violence. Director Devine Carama notes that this program serves as a temporary measure, while emphasizing the need for a broader strategy to address the root causes of violence affecting local youths, including substance use and conflicts arising between students.
