Castle Rock Uses AI Drones for Police Surveillance

The Castle Rock Police Department now utilizes AI-powered drones as first responders, capable of launching from four miles away, thanks to a new three-year, $600,000 agreement with Flock Safety. These drones can operate without a visual observer, flying at 400 feet under special waivers from the Federal Aviation Administration, which marks a notable advancement in automated surveillance capabilities for law enforcement in Colorado.

Designed to streamline responses to incidents, the drones can be deployed automatically from the department’s real-time crime center, eliminating the need for officers to be physically present to activate them. Castle Rock Police Chief Jack Cauley emphasizes the technology’s potential to enhance public safety, noting a 40% decrease in auto thefts since implementing Flock’s license plate readers. However, concerns arise over privacy implications, particularly regarding data sharing and potential misuse, stressing the importance of robust policies to govern the use of these new surveillance tools.
