Ofcom confirms that businesses operating within the lawful shooting trade are largely exempt from the compliance requirements of the Online Safety Act 2023, following the establishment of the Firearm Trade Working Group. This new collaboration, which includes representatives from the Gun Trade Association and Ofcom, aims to ensure the interests of shooting sports participants and retailers are preserved as regulations evolve.
The working group’s clarification means that legitimate firearms content, products, and services can continue to be accessed online without significant disruption. Only peer-to-peer classified and forum-based sites need to meet the Act’s children’s risk assessment criteria, marking a significant milestone for the shooting community’s online presence.
