Denver Allocates $3.1M for Violence Intervention Programs

Denver Mayor Mike Johnston has approved a landmark budget that dedicates $3.1 million to community violence intervention programs aimed at reducing crime through non-punitive strategies. This initiative will support local organizations in implementing crucial services, including street outreach, conflict mediation, and trauma-informed care, to effectively interrupt cycles of violence before they escalate.

Kim Gutierrez of GIFFORDS, the national gun violence prevention organization, emphasizes that this funding marks a vital shift towards prioritizing preventive measures in the face of rising violence. Community leaders, including Richard Morales from the Latino Coalition for Community Leadership, celebrate this decision as a necessary step forward, recognizing that previous efforts had been severely underfunded. Together, they advocate for the substantial need for resources dedicated to programs that save lives and improve community well-being.
