John Emanuel Banuelos, who is already accused of firing a gun during the U.S. Capitol riot, has been arrested on charges of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a woman in Utah. Authorities report that Banuelos, 40, allegedly drugged and assaulted a woman for over 12 hours in 2018, following an encounter at a train station where she was vulnerable and homeless at the time.
Banuelos was apprehended in Illinois last month based on a warrant from Salt Lake County, where he now faces felony charges of aggravated kidnapping and aggravated sexual assault. The woman reported that Banuelos not only assaulted her but also threatened her life, and DNA evidence has now linked him to the crime, which occurred more than two years before the January 6, 2021, Capitol incident. His previous Capitol-related charges were dismissed following a presidential pardon in 2021.
