Local Program Turns Deer Donations into Meals for Needy

This fall, Phillips Meats in Zanesville participates in the Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry (FHFH) program, allowing local hunters to donate harvested deer to support local food banks. So far this season, 35 deer have been donated, resulting in approximately 2,500 pounds of ground venison that will benefit organizations like Christ Table and the Salvation Army.

Owner Casey Phillips explains the donation process, where hunters bring legally tagged and field-dressed deer to the facility at no cost. The processed meat is packaged in three-pound portions for easy distribution to community soup kitchens. As hunting trends change, the number of donations is slightly up from last year, prompting interest in how hunters can continue to support their community through this initiative.
