The Bronx’s recent gun buyback initiative proves to be a resounding success, with 165 firearms, including semiautomatic weapons and ghost guns, collected over the weekend. This effort, organized by the Bronx District Attorney’s office in partnership with the NYPD, aims to bolster community safety and reduce gun violence in a precinct that has reported numerous shooting incidents this year.
Participants in the program received incentives, including gift cards up to $500 and high-value electronics, for surrendering their firearms. Notably, the event took place at St. James Episcopal Church, which has become a local focal point for disarmament efforts. With 16 shooting victims reported in the area this year alone, the community-driven initiative underscores the urgent need for action against firearms and highlights the willingness of residents to engage in promoting safety.
