During the opening weekend of Wisconsin’s deer-hunting season, a 24-year-old male was fatally injured following a self-inflicted gunshot wound, marking the state’s first gun-related fatality in hunting since 2022. The incident occurred in Fond du Lac County while the hunter was using a saddle stand, and is currently under investigation. A second incident also took place in Grant County where a 57-year-old man was shot in the buttock while approaching a hunting field.
Despite these unfortunate occurrences, reports indicate that hunters successfully harvested 48,748 antlered deer over the weekend, a slight increase compared to last year’s figures. A total of 777,843 hunting registrations were sold, showing steady participation year over year. Experts suggest that favorable weather conditions, such as snowfall, could lead to a higher deer harvest as the season continues through November 30.
