Busy Season for Peoria Heights Deer Processors

As hunting season peaks in Central Illinois, Peoria Heights’ Alwans & Son is experiencing a surge in deer processing volumes. Co-owner Patrick Alwan reports that the company typically processes between 1,000 to 1,500 deer each season and has already handled about 800 this year, keeping pace with their usual average. The recent opening of the shotgun season coincides with mating season, which often leads to increased deer activity.

Data from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources reveals that Peoria County recorded the highest deer harvest in recent years, with 586 deer taken during the first weekend of firearm season. Alwan notes that a dramatic influx can occur, with nearly 400 deer arriving in just three days during peak times, creating a busy and challenging environment for the processing team.
