Two National Guard members, Sarah Beckstrom and Andrew Wolfe, are in critical condition after being shot in a targeted attack by 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national who has ties to U.S. military efforts. The incident occurred around 2:15 p.m. near Farragut Square, just blocks from the White House, while the guardsmen were engaged in high-visibility patrols. Eyewitnesses described the situation as an ambush, with Lakanwal allegedly opening fire without provocation and striking one guardsman multiple times.
Following the attack, Lakanwal was also shot and taken to a hospital, while law enforcement officials, including the FBI, are treating the incident as a potential act of terrorism. The suspect’s background raised questions, as he previously assisted U.S. forces and was granted asylum earlier this year. As investigations continue, officials emphasize that charges will depend on the condition of the injured guardsmen, with possible repercussions including charges of first-degree murder if they succumb to their injuries.
