Family Calls for Autism Training After School Incident

The family of an autistic student, who experienced a traumatic encounter with a school resource officer at Fort Dorchester High School, is advocating for enhanced autism sensitivity training. This plea comes in response to a November incident where the officer drew a firearm after misinterpreting the student’s words during an inquiry about a potential weapon, resulting in the student being detained and the family subsequently pulling him out of the school. The student’s grandmother recalled her anxiety and disbelief upon hearing that an officer had pointed a gun at her grandson’s face.

This incident underscores the challenges faced by individuals with autism in law enforcement situations. The advocacy organization Just Bee emphasizes the necessity of training first responders to better understand and manage encounters with autistic individuals, noting that 93% of those on the spectrum report negative interactions with law enforcement. As the family navigates the aftermath, including seeking trauma therapy and legal action, they express hope for improved understanding and response protocols that can prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
