Michigan House Approves Harsher Penalties for Disarming Officers

The Michigan House has passed a bill that imposes stricter penalties for disarming a police officer, now classified as a felony with potential sentences of up to 15 years in prison. This decision, made by a significant 75-25 vote, reflects concerns from lawmakers about the rising danger to law enforcement agents, as current laws allow a maximum of only 10 years for such offenses.

Bill sponsor, State Rep. Mike Mueller, emphasizes that disarming an officer poses an immediate threat to their life and the safety of the community. The proposed legislation includes new provisions to protect additional categories of law enforcement personnel, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to safeguarding those who serve. With support from figures like Attorney General Dana Nessel, this bill is set to move to the Senate for further consideration.
