Florida’s recently enacted open carry law is generating significant concern among parents and students, who report feeling unsafe with armed individuals in public spaces. Nearly three months after the law took effect, 911 operators in Lake County have seen a spike in calls from residents alarmed by sightings of firearms, particularly near school bus stops.
One incident involved a man openly carrying what appeared to be an AR-style rifle near a bus stop, prompting multiple emergency calls from concerned parents and students. Despite the legal allowance for carrying guns in public areas, many parents express unease about the potential risks, stating they feel unprepared for how to react to such situations, especially in light of regular active shooter drills in schools.
