A Cuyahoga County sheriff’s supervisor is facing a civil rights lawsuit after allegedly beating and tasing an unarmed motorist during a routine traffic stop on December 8, 2023. Kevin Kinds claims he was knocked to the ground, punched multiple times, and tased three times by then-Sgt. Timothy Coyne, with body cam footage showing the dramatic encounter. The lawsuit asserts that the sheriff’s department failed to adequately train deputies, leading to this use of “excessive and unreasonable force” against Kinds, who was left with permanent injuries.
Kinds has since lost his job at the Cleveland Clinic and faced several charges related to the incident, which were later dismissed. Coyne, who has faced scrutiny for past incidents, is now a lieutenant with no record of disciplinary action despite the allegations made against him. The lawsuit seeks over $25,000 in damages, highlighting tensions surrounding the public’s perception of the sheriff’s department’s actions and the deployment of deputies in downtown Cleveland.
