Indigenous People Face High Rates of Gun Violence

A recent report reveals that Indigenous people in the U.S. are among the most impacted by gun violence, ranking second in victimization rates among all populations. The Violence Policy Center underscores that this crisis is a direct consequence of colonization and systemic racism, with alarming gun suicide and homicide rates particularly affecting Indigenous men and women.

The findings indicate that Oklahoma has the second-highest gun suicide rate for Indigenous individuals, trailing only Alaska. Alarmingly, since 2015, the homicide rate for American Indian and Alaska Native women killed by males has also surged to become the second highest in the nation, signaling a pressing need for targeted interventions. Public health recommendations aim to mitigate risks, suggesting measures like safe firearm storage and access to mental health support, but the report highlights that the data, especially concerning Indigenous women, may be significantly underreported.
