The Indian Army has finalized a significant procurement contract with a US firm for 72,400 Sig Sauer assault rifles at a cost of approximately Rs 700 crore, according to Defence Ministry officials. This deal comes under the fast-track procurement procedure aimed at rapidly enhancing the Army’s capabilities along the extensive 3,600-km border with China.
These 7.62mm rifles will replace the outdated 5.56mm INSAS rifles currently in use, addressing an urgent operational need for more modern and reliable equipment. This strategic move reflects India’s ongoing efforts to update its military arsenal and follows previous attempts to source weaponry from global markets after domestic options fell short during testing.
