The U.S. Army is set to begin fielding its new Sig Sauer modular handguns, the XM17 and XM18, to soldiers in November 2025, starting with the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. These handguns have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from troops who tested them during spring evaluations, with a unanimous agreement that they outperform the legacy M9 pistol in both comfort and performance.
Key features of the XM17 and XM18 include improved ergonomics thanks to their adjustable handgrips, an external safety, and self-illuminating sights for low-light scenarios. The Army plans to distribute approximately 2,000 of these handguns initially, with full deployment across all units over the next decade, marking a significant upgrade from the outdated M9, which has been in service since 1986.
