Milwaukee is set to honor victims of gun violence with a candlelight vigil on December 10, an event that brings together community members affected by this crisis. Among them is Debra Gillispie, founder of Mothers Against Gun Violence, who channels her grief into advocacy after losing her son, Kirk Patrick Bickham Jr., to violence in 2003. Gillispie recounts the pain of discovering not only her son’s murder but also the media’s initial suggestion that he was involved in gang-related activity.
Through her organization, Gillispie has connected with over 100 individuals, fostering a community of support for those touched by gun violence. The vigil, which takes place at 6091 North Teutonia Avenue, will include a moment of silence as part of a broader nationwide effort to acknowledge and heal from the impact of gun violence. This year’s event highlights not just loss but also resilience, as survivors share their stories and advocate for change.
