An investigative report reveals that more than 650 federal court cases have mentioned the communication platform Discord, with nearly 60% tied to criminal activities such as child exploitation and scams. In New Mexico, at least 14 additional local cases have emerged since 2019, involving serious offenses including domestic violence and adult interactions with minors.
Eric O’Neill, a former FBI counterintelligence agent, describes Discord as a “digital blind spot,” noting that users can easily control access to their servers, complicating law enforcement’s ability to track illegal activities. Recent findings indicate that a significant case in Santa Teresa involved a man admitting to sharing child pornography through the platform, prompting a closer look at how these online interactions may pose risks to vulnerable users, especially children.
