The Michigan Senate Civil Rights, Judiciary and Public Safety Committee is reviewing potential legislation that would enable individuals to voluntarily place themselves on a ‘do-not-sell’ firearms list, a move aimed at suicide prevention. Senator Rosemary Bayer supports the initiative, citing that 90% of suicide attempts involving firearms are fatal and emphasizing the need for measures that help keep firearms away from those in crisis.

In 2023, Michigan reported 1,530 suicide cases, with over half involving firearms, highlighting the urgency of such preventive strategies. Advocates argue that this voluntary self-control measure does not infringe on Second Amendment rights and could save lives, reflecting a growing trend already adopted in several other states.
