Majority of Minnesotans Favor Assault Weapons Ban

A recent statewide poll shows that over 66% of Minnesotans support banning the sale of assault-style weapons, such as the AR-15, as state lawmakers gear up for their February return to Saint Paul. Conducted by the Minnesota Community Survey, the results indicate a significant divide based on region and political affiliation, with 68% of suburban residents strongly backing the ban compared to only 53% in greater Minnesota.

The partisan divide is particularly pronounced, with a stark 43-point gap: 84% of Democrats are in favor, whereas only 36% of Republicans share that view. Notably, older adults aged 65 and above express the highest support for the ban, while those aged 30 to 49 show the least. This public opinion context sets a critical backdrop for future discussions about gun control in Minnesota.
