Authorities in New Mexico are facing scrutiny after two boys, ages 7 and 9, engaged in an armed standoff with deputies, seen on drone footage holding a loaded handgun. The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) has chosen not to file charges against the children, citing their young ages and the complexities of juvenile behavior as they initiated a behavioral health initiative to address such incidents.
Video from the incident, which occurred on February 16, 2025, shows the boys dressed in pajamas themed from Minecraft and Star Wars, attempting to evade capture. Sheriff John Allen emphasized the need to assist the children’s families, stating that their department has been called to the home numerous times prior to this event and that the gun was successfully seized without injury. The focus now appears to be on providing support rather than punishment.
