The Canadian government has yet to fulfill its commitment to send banned firearms to aid Ukraine, despite a pledge made last December. Officials confirmed that while over 12,000 guns have been bought back from businesses as part of a federal buyback program, none have been designated for donation to support Ukraine’s defense against Russian aggression.
This promise, made by former Defense Minister Bill Blair, coincided with the expansion of Canada’s list of prohibited firearms to more than 2,000 models, raising concerns among experts about the efficacy and intent of the government’s actions. As the program faces delays and critics question its implementation, a spokesperson from Public Safety Canada indicated that the government continues to assess which firearms, if any, could be sent to Ukraine in the coming months.
