The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) designates Davie County as part of a secondary surveillance area for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), effective for the 2025-26 deer hunting season. This marks a continued effort to mitigate the spread of CWD, with 10 deer testing positive during the 2024-25 season and a total of 34 confirmed cases across the state.
With no new counties being added to the primary or secondary surveillance list, NCWRC highlights the importance of ongoing voluntary testing as they exceeded sampling goals by gathering over 23,000 samples last hunting season. Hunters are urged to utilize self-serve drop-off freezers to submit their deer heads for testing, helping track the disease’s prevalence while adhering to regulations that limit the transportation of potentially infected deer products.
