Ex-Afghan Translator Fatally Shot After Drawing Gun on Police

A traffic stop in Fairfax, Virginia, escalates dramatically when Jamal Wali, a 36-year-old former translator for U.S. forces in Afghanistan, draws a gun on three police officers. In unsettling bodycam footage from the April 23 incident, Wali can be heard shouting anti-American remarks and claiming he should have aligned himself with the Taliban before firing at the officers, resulting in his fatal shooting by police.

The traffic stop was triggered by an expired safety inspection sticker on Wali’s vehicle. As the confrontation unfolds, Wali expresses frustration over his immigration status and inability to find work or assistance, declaring, “I can’t get a job,” and challenging police as backup arrives. Despite attempts to provide life-saving measures, Wali dies at a local hospital while two officers suffer non-life-threatening injuries from the exchange of gunfire.
