Subpoenas Issued in Jacksonville Gun Registry Probe

The 4th Circuit State Attorney has issued subpoenas to several members of the Donna Deegan administration as part of an investigation into a purported illegal gun registry maintained in Jacksonville city buildings. Notable figures subpoenaed include Chief Administrative Officer Karen Bowling and former public safety chief Lakeisha Burton, amidst allegations that the registry violates Florida Statutes 790.335, which prohibits such registries under threat of criminal penalties.

This probe follows State Attorney Melissa Nelson’s request for Jacksonville City Council Republicans to pause their internal investigation related to the issue. The subpoenas specifically seek communications containing terms associated with firearms and security, raising questions about practices following the implementation of a permitless carry law coinciding with Deegan’s inauguration. The controversy has drawn criticism from both Attorney General James Uthmeier and former Mayor Lenny Curry, highlighting the complex legal landscape surrounding firearms regulation in the city.
