A 70-year-old man, William H. Schmieding, is charged after his firearm accidentally discharged at Frank’s Pizza in Flanders, New Jersey, injuring an 89-year-old woman. While dining with friends, Schmieding mishandled his Smith and Wesson Bodyguard handgun, resulting in a round striking the victim in the left leg, who is now in stable condition at a local hospital.
Schmieding, a permitted handgun carrier, faces severe charges, including aggravated assault and violating safe carry firearm requirements. Following the incident on October 20, he is currently detained at the Morris County Correctional Facility, with the investigation ongoing and local authorities urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
