Deputy Suspended for Leaving Gun at School Parking Lot

A Genesee County deputy is suspended without pay after accidentally leaving his loaded duty weapon in the parking lot of Lapeer High School. Jonathan Becher, who has 16 years of service, faces a charge of reckless use of a firearm after a school employee discovered the gun in a lunch cooler left unattended for nearly nine hours.

Becher’s attorney, Doug Gutscher, argues that no crime was committed, stating, “Despite government’s desire, not everything is a crime.” The sheriff’s department is currently conducting an internal investigation, with a disciplinary hearing planned for Becher, who expressed shock over the incident. The case raises questions about responsibility and safety regarding law enforcement officers’ handling of firearms.
