TN Legislature Debates Bill on Firearm Liability Protections

The Tennessee House and Senate prepare to debate a significant bill aimed at protecting weapons, ammunition, and body armor manufacturers from civil lawsuits, particularly those arising from criminal misuse. Sponsored by Rep. Monty Fritts and Sen. Joey Hensley, the proposed legislation not only seeks to limit liability for firearm-related damages but also restricts local jurisdictions from enacting regulations that conflict with state firearm laws.

This legislative move follows a high-profile lawsuit initiated by Mexico against several gun manufacturers, alleging their role in cartel violence. Interestingly, Tennessee currently leads the nation in per capita employment within the firearms industry, with around 8,000 jobs attributed to this sector. As the state assembly convenes to deliberate this bill, which also broadens the definition of “qualified products” to encompass items like knives and pepper spray, the implications for both local governance and gun industry accountability could be profound.
