MCPS Launches Gun Safety Initiative for Suicide Prevention

Missoula County Public Schools (MCPS) initiates a significant gun safety campaign this week as part of Suicide Prevention Week, aimed at safeguarding students during critical mental health moments. The MCPS Secure Storage Campaign provides free trigger locks and cable locks at all MCPS high schools and middle schools, addressing alarming statistics that show nearly 70% of youth suicides in Montana involve a firearm.

In a proactive approach to combat this pressing public health issue, families can collect two combination trigger locks and up to five cable locks at no cost. Additionally, the initiative features a drawing for biometric safes, donated by Safe Kids Missoula, encouraging safe firearm storage in homes. This campaign is particularly vital in Montana, where suicide is the leading cause of death among teenagers, highlighting the need for comprehensive safety measures during mental health crises.
