Maine lawmakers reconvene this Wednesday to deliberate a significant proposal aimed at restoring the right to possess firearms for individuals convicted of nonviolent felonies. Sponsored by Rep. Chad Perkins (R-Dover-Foxcroft), the bill, known as LD 1009, requires that rights can only be restored after a ten-year waiting period following the completion of a sentence.
The Judiciary Committee previously held a public hearing where the Department of Public Safety opposed the measure, citing concerns about limited resources and workload. While no amendments have been proposed yet, discussions may explore the possibility of amending the process for restoring rights while ensuring justice for victims remains intact.
