A.I. Gun Detection System Faces Review After False Alarm

Baltimore County officials are calling for a review of an A.I. gun detection system following a false alarm at Kenwood High School, where a student was wrongly flagged for having a weapon. The alert was triggered when a chip bag was mistaken for a firearm, prompting police to respond with guns drawn. Councilman Julian Jones expressed his concern, questioning how such an error could occur and emphasizing the need for better verification measures in schools.

Installed in 2023, the Omnilert A.I. system is designed to analyze visual data and signal potential threats, but it relies on human verification to confirm any alarms. Following the false alert, Superintendent Dr. Myriam Rogers reiterated the importance of this verification step, yet the incident has raised significant questions about the reliability of A.I. in school safety protocols. As similar technologies face scrutiny nationwide, Baltimore County leaders seek a thorough evaluation to prevent future occurrences and ensure student safety.
