The New York Attorney General’s Office clears Syracuse police officer Christopher Mazzotti of any criminal wrongdoing in the fatal shooting of 42-year-old Donnell Hogan. The report states that Mazzotti shot Hogan once in the head after Hogan fired a gun at another officer during a police response to reports of gunfire at an apartment complex in May.
The investigation revealed that Hogan, who was in a wheelchair and had a loaded weapon that was jammed, raised his gun as officers entered the hallway. The AG’s office determined that Mazzotti’s actions were justified under New York’s justification law, which permits deadly force when necessary to defend against threats. Mazzotti, who has been with the force for five years, is now back on duty after being placed on paid administrative leave following the incident.
