An artificial intelligence security system at a Baltimore County high school mistakenly identified a student’s empty Doritos bag as a weapon, prompting a heavy police response. Taki Allen, a student at Kenwood High School, found himself surrounded by eight police cars and ordered to the ground as officers responded to an alert indicating he was armed. In a panic, he complied, only to have the situation defused when officials discovered the supposed weapon was merely a crumpled snack bag in his pocket.
The incident, which unfolded after football practice, raises concerns about the reliability of AI gun detection technology implemented in schools to enhance safety. Baltimore County schools began using this system last year to monitor for weapons proactively. Following the alarming event, which involved immediate police action and a subsequent review by school safety officials, the system’s effectiveness is now under scrutiny, prompting discussions on the need for better protocols to prevent such misunderstandings in the future.
