Alabama Enacts New Gun Violence Legislation

Governor Kay Ivey has signed Senate Bill 119 into law, a significant step in addressing rising gun violence in Alabama’s cities. This legislation not only increases penalties for gun-related offenses but also expands Aniah’s Law to include additional serious crimes, aiming to improve public safety and reduce crime rates in urban areas.

The bill introduces stricter measures, such as elevating the offense of shooting into an occupied dwelling to a Class A felony and imposing new sanctions on probationers found with firearms. These changes, which take effect in October, reflect a determined effort by lawmakers to tackle violence and ensure that those with prior felony convictions or awaiting trial for violent crimes cannot possess firearms.
