Alabama Expands Gun Laws to Address Violence

Governor Kay Ivey has signed Senate Bill 119 into law, introducing significant measures aimed at curbing gun violence in Alabama’s inner cities. Effective October 1, 2025, the legislation imposes new firearm possession prohibitions, making it a class C felony for individuals with certain felony convictions to own firearms, while also increasing penalties for shooting into occupied dwellings.

The revised law also broadens the application of Aniah’s Law, including offenders who shoot into homes among those eligible for enhanced judicial scrutiny. With these changes, including stricter sanctions for parolees found in possession of firearms, Ivey anticipates improved public safety and a reduction in gun-related crime.
