Albany Man Gets 7 Years for Gun Possession, Assault

Atiba Alfred, a 26-year-old man from Albany, has been sentenced to seven years in state prison after being found with two illegal handguns and assaulting a woman. The incident occurred on March 21, 2024, when police observed Alfred repeatedly striking the victim in the face; he fled the scene but was apprehended after injuring an officer while trying to escape into a residence. His initial five-year sentence for the weapons charge was extended after he was arrested again for allegedly robbing two citizens while awaiting sentencing.

Alfred pleaded guilty to Attempted Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, resulting in the maximum penalty for this crime. He also faces additional time for the pending robbery charges, highlighting a troubling pattern of violent behavior and illegal firearm possession. The case underscores ongoing concerns about gun violence and public safety in Albany.
