While a bipartisan school safety bill has been enacted, key proposals aimed at promoting safe gun storage and requiring background checks faced overwhelming opposition, with not a single gun safety bill passing in the last session.
State Rep. Michelle Au, who has sponsored multiple gun-related bills, noted that political dynamics have shifted focus away from gun control, despite the urgency sparked by the Apalachee incident. A recent Republican-backed bill to restrict gun access at events, surprisingly, was dismissed by a GOP-majority committee, reflecting a broader reluctance among lawmakers to address gun ownership regulations, even in the aftermath of such a tragic event.
