A coalition of gun rights organizations has filed an appeal to a federal court seeking to overturn New York City’s ban on stun guns and Tasers, arguing that the prohibition is unconstitutional. The Firearms Policy Coalition contends that the ban contradicts the Second Amendment, citing previous federal rulings that recognize stun guns as “arms” protected under the law. They emphasize that these electronic weapons are often considered safer alternatives for self-defense compared to firearms.
In March, a U.S. District Court dismissal of the lawsuit highlighted the plaintiffs’ failure to demonstrate that these devices are “in common use,” yet gun rights advocates maintain that the ban disproportionately impacts citizens seeking viable self-defense options. As New York stands as one of the few states with such strict regulations, the outcome of this appeal could set a precedent for similar cases across the nation, especially following the Supreme Court’s recent rulings regarding gun rights.
