Arizona Bill Could Allow Guns at College Events

Arizona’s Senate Bill 1020 proposes to mandate that colleges and universities allow individuals with concealed-carry permits to bring firearms into classrooms, dorms, and sporting events. Carmen Rojas, a 20-year-old student from Paradise Valley Community College and a volunteer with Students Demand Action, strongly opposes this legislation, arguing it would jeopardize the safety of students and staff. She emphasizes that local governing boards, including the Maricopa Community Colleges Governing Board, currently uphold restrictions on firearms to protect the campus community.

Rojas and other opponents of the bill fear that placing guns in educational settings diminishes a sense of security at academic institutions. The bill represents a significant shift in policy that could enforce gun access where it is currently prohibited, igniting a debate over students’ rights and safety. Governor Katie Hobbs has the authority to veto the bill, and many are urging her to act decisively against it for the well-being of Arizona’s students.
