Arkansas Ballot Campaigns Energized by Court Ruling

A federal judge’s recent ruling allows Arkansas ballot campaigns to gather signatures for proposed measures for the 2026 general election without the burden of newly imposed restrictions. U.S. District Court Judge Timothy L. Brooks issued a preliminary injunction against laws requiring voters to read legal summaries and show photo identification before signing petitions, citing concerns these regulations infringe on citizens’ rights to participate in public debate.

Following this ruling, campaign groups such as the League of Women Voters of Arkansas express heightened enthusiasm, as they anticipate collecting the required 90,704 signatures by July 3. Many activists are eager to capitalize on the momentum, with the League already gathering approximately 6,000 signatures since May. As campaigns prepare to ramp up their efforts, supporters are hopeful that the court’s decision will facilitate a more accessible petition process, despite ongoing state appeals against the ruling.
