Armed Man Shot Twice Before Confrontation with Deputies

An armed man in Cherokee County, South Carolina, was shot twice by deputies during a tense standoff outside his home, leading to his arrest on multiple charges. Gregory Scott Byers, 58, confronted the officers while holding a shotgun and pistols, threatening a woman before law enforcement intervened. The confrontation escalated when, after being shot, Byers managed to grab a deputy’s gun and fire it, although no one was struck.

Byers sustained non-life-threatening injuries and has since been charged with four counts of presenting firearms at a person, among other charges. The investigation is being handled by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, as details surrounding the initial incident and the subsequent shooting continue to unfold. The sheriff’s office has placed three deputies involved on administrative leave pending an internal review.
