North Miami Beach police have made a significant breakthrough in a nearly 40-year-old murder case, arresting 64-year-old Jeffrey Taylor in connection with the 1986 murder of Shirley Brant, a local real estate broker. Brant was fatally shot in her office while on the phone with a client, and despite numerous investigations, her case remained unsolved until a dedicated Cold Case Unit reexamined the evidence and discovered previously unentered fingerprints.
This revival of the cold case highlights the advancements in forensic technology; police reanalyzed fingerprints collected at the scene that were not processed at the time due to outdated criteria. The match to Taylor’s prints was confirmed earlier this year, leading to his arrest on April 24, 2025. “We hope this arrest brings a measure of closure to the Brant family and all who knew her,” stated North Miami Beach police Chief Juan Pinillos, underscoring the case’s emotional weight for the community.
