The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) is initiating a campaign titled “Don’t Lie For the Other Guy” aimed at addressing illegal gun purchases, specifically straw purchasing. This practice, where individuals buy firearms for someone without proper licensing, poses a significant risk by funneling weapons to criminals, according to Special Agent Jason Stankiewicz.
As part of this 25-year-old campaign, the ATF collaborates with various local law enforcement agencies to remind the public that engaging in straw purchasing can result in severe penalties, including up to 15 years in prison. Furthermore, if a firearm involved in such transactions is used in a crime, the original purchaser could face accomplice charges, highlighting the potential far-reaching consequences of these illegal acts.
